The recent executive orders signed by President Trump have left many in the transgender and gender-diverse community feeling vulnerable and uncertain about the future. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated attack. Across the world, we're seeing a rise in anti-trans rhetoric and hate.
In times like this, we have to remember that we are not alone. No matter how hard they try to make us feel isolated, our greatest weapon is connection. Connection to ourselves, to each other, and to our allies.
Building Community Connections
- Seek out local LGBTQ+ organizations and support groups. This doesn't have to be limited to non-profit organizations, you can look into recreational sports leagues, clubs, and social events.
- If you don't have access to in-person groups, engage with the trans community online on platforms such as Reddit and Tik Tok.
Developing Resilience Strategies
Resilience is key to maintaining our mental health and well-being:
- Practice self-care through activities that bring you joy and peace, such as hobbies, exercise, or meditation.
- Cultivate a strong support network of friends, chosen family, and allies who affirm and celebrate your identity.
- Engage in advocacy and activism if you feel comfortable doing so. This can provide a sense of empowerment and purpose.
- Seek professional mental health support if needed.
Embracing Your Identity
Remember: your identity is valid and worthy of celebration, no matter what small-minded people say.
- Surround yourself with positive representations of trans folks in media, literature, and real life. Trans folks are out here living joyous and full lives! Don't let conservatives convince you otherwise.
- Explore and express your gender identity in ways that feel authentic to you.
- Connect with other transgender folks who can offer guidance, support, and mentorship.
Staying Informed and Prepared
While it's important to stay informed about policy changes, it's equally crucial to balance this with self-care:
- Stay updated on your rights and any legal changes that may affect you, but set boundaries to avoid becoming overwhelmed. In the U.S., organizations like Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) are a great resource.
- If you can, update your identity documents to reflect your gender identity. In the U.S., A4TE's ID Documents Center provides guidance on changing your name and gender marker on official documents.
Finding Hope in Collective Strength
Remember, we were here 100 years ago and we'll be here 100 years from now:
- Draw strength from the stories of those who have paved the way before us.
- Celebrate the small victories and progress made, even in challenging times.
- Contribute to and participate in mutual aid networks within your community.
While the current political climate may feel daunting, it's essential to remember that the transgender community is strong, resilient, and capable of weathering this storm. By building connections, developing coping strategies, and embracing our identities, we can continue to create spaces of acceptance, understanding, and empowerment for all transgender folks.
